How NOT to transfer your blog

Don’t get fed up with your current host, do minimal research on how to transfer your blog, and then jump into it without knowing wtf you’re doing.

Don’t buy a hosting account that will only let you upload files 10MB or smaller, no matter what you do or who you ask, especially if the backup copy of your blog– the thing you need to import to make your blog work!– is, at this point, more than 50MB big.

Don’t transfer your domain name to that new hosting account! Also, don’t then try to transfer the domain name BACK, as it’s impossible to do that for at least 60 days and it will be stuck in transferring mode for five to seven days, meaning you can’t use it until it cancels automatically.

Do spend the extra $20 and buy an account at a hosting company that will let you upload whatever size files you want.

Do be thankful that you can cancel your first, useless hosting account with only a minimal fee.

Ugh. So, basically, Birdbrain(ed) Book Blog will be back online sometime next week. I have to wait for the domain to cancel transferring automatically, which should be either on Sunday or Tuesday, depending on if “days” means “business days” or not.

Being without my book blog has made me feel really wretched and dismal and bereft. I’m used to being away for it for a week or two at a time, but whenever I’ve done that before it’s still been in existence, at least! Now it only exists as backup copies on my computer. I’ve still got this blog here, but it’s not the same as having a blog I’ve put 3 years of hard work into. :(

Anyway, thanks to everyone who’s been supportive about my blog hosting woes! Hopefully this sort of thing won’t happen again.

  1. Stories like this have made me leery of of transferring my blog. I just create pointless blogs on wordpress until frustration passes.

    • What usually happens to me is I get impatient to do something and so just jump right in without making a plan first. And then it takes me all day to fix whatever I’ve screwed up and/or find a solution. :P
